Dostavba levého křídla Průmyslového paláce Praha

Idea projektu

The aim of the project was to create a contemporary interpretation of the left wing of the Industrial Palace in Prague, which was destroyed by fire in 2008. Unlike the planned replica, which was intended merely to preserve the historical state without regard for current architectural possibilities, the design focused on a progressive approach that respected the historical value of the building while meeting the demands of the 21st century. The Industrial Palace, originally designed by Bedřich Münzberger for the Jubilee Provincial Exhibition in 1891, represented an innovative combination of traditional and iron structures, inspired by the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. This spirit of progress served as the inspiration for the proposed solution, which incorporated modern materials, technologies, and functions.

Popis projektu

The design concept and the form of the building were based both on the flow of people through the contemporary space and the assumption of enabling a direct path through the structure to the adjacent busy routes of the exhibition grounds, as well as the connection to the nearby Royal Game Reserve, Stromovka. The architectural language of the building also responds to the historical context of the site—the organic roof structure follows and is inspired by the segmented arches found on the original façades of the Industrial Palace, evoking a sense of a continuous elongated curved line and thus connecting historical legacy with modern architectural expression. The building functions as an exhibition space, arranged across the ground floor and two underground levels. The first underground floor is linked to an outdoor gathering area, recessed into the terrain. Beyond the overall shape, the dominant structural feature is the central element—a "funnel"—which extends through all floors and contains the main staircase. This funnel serves both a structural and architectural role. On the ground floor, it acts as an ornamental feature within the interior garden, while skylights bring natural light down to the lower levels. This effect is further enhanced in the underground floors by a water feature: water runs down the inner glazing around the perimeter of the funnel, creating a sense of connection with the exterior.

Technické informace

The main structural system of the building consists of parametrically designed massive glued laminated timber beams, which define the organic form of the structure and also support the walkable roof surface. The underground levels are constructed using reinforced concrete walls and columns, founded on reinforced concrete strip footings. Glass is also extensively used throughout the building, playing a significant role in both the structural composition and architectural expression, particularly in the façades and central skylights.
