KASHITU SCHOOL

Idea projektu

The project addresses the design of a secondary school campus in Kashitu, a rural area of Zambia. The project’s goal was to create a functional and sustainable educational complex that responds to local climatic and social conditions. The campus includes classrooms for both theoretical and practical craft education, student accommodation, a dining hall, sports facilities, and community spaces. The urban design is based on a circular shape, which is typical for African culture and symbolizes equality and community.

Popis projektu

The campus is divided into several zones arranged according to circular geometry. Each zone has its own center, serving as an orientation point and a place for gathering. The architecture is based on a modular system of buildings, which allows flexibility in construction and operation. The design draws on traditional rural architecture and utilizes local, readily available materials, especially unfired bricks. The roofscape combines shed and gable shapes. Great emphasis is placed on natural ventilation, shading, and creating a comfortable microclimate. The design also includes a rainwater harvesting system, solar collectors, and photovoltaic panels that help ensure the campus’s ecological and energy self-sufficiency.

Technické informace

The school's structural design prioritises durability, resilience, and local materials, with reinforced concrete used for stability in harsh climates. Concrete slabs ensure durability of floor structures, while a reinforced concrete water channel facilitates reliable water flow control. Load-bearing structures feature reinforced concrete columns and unfired brick walls, reducing construction time and costs. Walls are reinforced with concrete rings for added strength, and the roof is supported by reinforced concrete beams and steel trusses. Steel sheet roofing allows for ventilation and maintains a comfortable indoor climate. These design choices showcase a focus on long-lasting materials and techniques to ensure the building's sustainability and functionality.
