Ta Ngao school, Viet Nam

Idea projektu

The project deals with the design of a sustainable primary and nursery school in a rural area of northern Vietnam. Local children have difficult access to education, and the school could provide them with a better future. The idea behind the design is to create a school that is harmoniously integrated into the landscape of terraced rice fields and built from local materials.

Popis projektu

Tả Ngảo School is a sustainable rural school that integrates harmoniously into the landscape and provides a pleasant learning environment for the children of the area. Local materials such as stone, bamboo, burnt bricks or corrugated sheet will be used for the construction of the school. The design envisages the possible use of technologies such as solar panels and batteries to store solar energy, or rainwater collection in underground tanks, and its subsequent use. The building is divided into three functional parts - a primary school, a kindergarten and common facilities. Thanks to the covered outdoor space running through the entire building, the transition between the interior and exterior is gradual and offers the possibility of extending the teaching space or varying the children's leisure time. The school building is complemented by outdoor spaces such as a playground, sports field, assembly yard, school beds, or artificial rice terraces complementing the natural scenery in the school's vicinity.

Technické informace

The use of building materials is based on local traditions and customs. Locally available, commonly used raw materials are mainly used for construction. The building is based on concrete footings and columns which allow the school to be elevated above the ground and allow water to flow during heavy rainfall. A monolithic concrete grid is placed on top of the columns, which will be hollowed out and then decompressed. This grid forms the main load-bearing structure. A trapezoidal sheet will be inserted into the concrete grid to form the lost formwork for the concrete slab that will be poured into it. The walls of the building are made of solid burnt bricks and are complemented by bamboo columns supporting the roof. The door sashes and window frames are wooden with a coloured finish. In some parts, folding partitions of corten are inserted between the walls to allow for the extension of the interior spaces and the connection between the interior and exterior. The perimeter structure is made of bamboo and serves as the supporting structure of the roof. Corrugated polycarbonate is placed between the roof and the brick walls to better illuminate the interior. The roof structure is made up of a bamboo grid, which is supported by bamboo columns around the perimeter and in the central parts. Corrugated metal roofing is placed on the grid. The view layer in the interior consists of a ceiling made of fine bamboo. Local stone is used to create the artificial terraces running under the school building and the access path in the school grounds.
