Curling Arena, Prague

Idea projektu

The newly designed curling hall in Prague’s Holešovice district presents an innovative synthesis of sports functionality and architectural poetry. Inspired by the organic forms of drifting ice floes, the building explores the expressive potential of lightweight construction through its dynamic steel-ETFE membrane system. The primary structure of steel IPE profiles supports a translucent envelope of ETFE foil cushions, creating an energy-efficient shell that plays with natural light and transparency. Key design elements include water features integrated with glazed surfaces, reinforcing the ice-inspired concept while enhancing the building's visual dynamism. The interior spaces are designed for flexibility, accommodating both professional tournaments and community events. The project transforms its post-industrial context into a vibrant public landmark, where the architecture physically embodies the grace and movement of curling. More than just an athletic facility, this design demonstrates how technical innovation - from the precision-engineered steel framework to the responsive ETFE membrane - can create spaces that inspire both athletes and visitors.

Popis projektu

This competition entry presents a comprehensive architectural solution for a new curling hall in Prague's Holešovice district, merging innovative design with technical precision. The project scope encompasses a complete architectural vision - from urban integration to structural detailing - all unified through an ice floe-inspired concept. The design features a hybrid structural system combining primary steel IPE profiles with a secondary lightweight grid, supporting an energy-efficient ETFE foil membrane cladding that creates dynamic light effects. Building services are carefully integrated, including specialized systems for ice rink maintenance and precise climate control within the competition spaces. Interior layouts prioritize functionality and flexibility, with spaces designed for professional athletes, spectators, and community use. The material palette emphasizes transparency and lightness through glass, steel and ETFE, while incorporating durable finishes for high-traffic areas. Key technical elements include: optimized acoustics for sporting events, accessible circulation routes meeting all standards, and sustainable systems reducing operational energy use. The project transforms an underutilized urban site into a vibrant sports destination, where architectural expression enhances both the athlete's experience and the spectator's enjoyment of the sport.

Technické informace

The project features an innovative structural system combining primary load-bearing steel IPE 150 profiles with a secondary lightweight spatial grid of thin-walled steel members, supporting a dynamic double-layer ETFE foil cushion cladding (250μm). The facade integrates a unique water flow system across glass surfaces, creating both visual effects and passive cooling.
