Idea projektu
The basic design concept is based on the movement of the sun across the sky and its varying heights during different seasons of the year. Since artificial lighting cannot be used in the building, the rooms are arranged according to the cardinal directions based on their function and their natural lighting requirements throughout the day. In the design process, I first focused on the orientation of the rooms in relation to the sun and the cardinal points. I determined which rooms should receive morning, afternoon, and evening sunlight. Then, I addressed the mass arrangement of the building. Initially, I planned to work with three rectangular blocks, but they proved unsuitable for the solar considerations I wanted to use. Therefore, I chose the form of a cylinder recessed into a cube with a square base, where the diameter of the cylinder matches the side length of the square. I then raised the cylinder to emphasize it as the main social space, which also created room for a study. To regulate light within the cylinder, I used panels that control the sunlight entering different parts of the room throughout the day. For the cube, shading is provided by climbing plants attached to steel cables surrounding the entire perimeter. In summer, these plants shade all the large windows.
Popis projektu
The site is located in the cadastral area of the Brno-Medlánky district. The plot lies on the western edge of an undeveloped area on the Small Medlánecký Hill. The surroundings consist of grassy areas and low-growing trees. The main access to the site is from a paved path connecting to Purkyňova, Žebětínek, and Turistická streets. The plot is situated on a gentle slope that descends towards the west. The proposed building is located at the eastern end of the plot on a flat area at the hilltop, and a paved path leads to it. The building is designed for a couple and is divided into social, quiet, and service zones. The entrance is located on the western side of the cube. A small cloakroom for coats is situated near the entrance. From the vestibule, you enter a corridor that leads either to the quiet zone or the social zone. The rest of the cube contains the quiet zone, which includes a bedroom with a walk-through bathroom connected to a dressing room. The social zone is located in the southwest part within the cylindrical volume. It consists of an open kitchen, dining area, and living room. On the second floor, there is a study situated above the kitchen area, which provides access to a terrace and a green roof.
Technické informace
The primary structural system of the building consists of a reinforced concrete wall structure, which provides high stability and load-bearing capacity. The floor slabs are constructed from reinforced concrete panels, offering durability and effective support for the upper floors. The partition walls that divide the interior spaces are made of concrete masonry units with thicknesses of either 250 mm or 150 mm, chosen based on structural and acoustic requirements. The materials used throughout the building include glass, which allows for ample natural light and visual transparency; wood, employed for its warmth and aesthetic qualities in interior finishes; exposed concrete, providing a raw, robust appearance that emphasizes the architectural form; and steel cables, which are integrated as functional and design elements, possibly used for structural support or as part of shading and facade systems. This combination of materials balances structural integrity, functionality, and a contemporary architectural expression.
