Development of the city of Trnava

Idea projektu

Our design responds sensitively to the surrounding urban context, creating a subtle yet firmly rooted connection with the existing structure of the city. The area is enriched by nearby sports facilities, a calvary with an adjacent park, and the dominant natural element—the Trnávka River. The city’s future plans include the revitalization of the northern area known as Kravský pasienok, which will be transformed into a forest park with a pond as part of a broader flood protection strategy. This new park will not only improve the immediate environment but also enhance the overall quality of urban connectivity. An extended axis of centrality from the historic center of Trnava continues into the area, forming a green pedestrian corridor with two main public spaces—squares—within the development. The main square will feature a flexible, multifunctional market, primarily dedicated to the sale of locally grown food and handmade products. Its adaptable layout will allow for a variety of events and activities, making it a vibrant hub of community life. In the nearby area, large expanses of fertile land offer the potential for an urban farm, reviving the site’s original productive character. Produce grown here would be sold directly at the market or through mobile stalls distributed along the pedestrian zone. A central principle of the design is inclusivity. The area offers a diverse housing mix for people at different life stages, contributing to a socially balanced and integrated community. This includes apartment buildings, terraced family homes with gardens, and transitional housing in the form of a boarding facility—intended for students from nearby schools and workers from the local industrial zone.

Popis projektu

The area developed during this semester-long urban planning studio is a brownfield site in the city of Trnava, which is set to be transformed into a new development zone with a primarily residential function in the future. Currently, the 23-hectare area has a warehouse and industrial character. Its most prominent feature is the active Sessler Brewery, which creates a unique atmosphere with its two brick chimneys and the distinctive smell of production. In addition to the brewery, remnants of the original railway station are preserved on the site, serving as reminders of its industrial past.

Technické informácie

The development is carefully planned with the psychological well-being of its residents in mind. Low-rise buildings create an intimate, human-scale environment and support clear orientation within the space. The overall layout emphasizes logical spatial connections, contributing to comfort and a strong sense of place. Semi-private courtyards, open views to green areas, and a focus on human interaction reinforce the feeling of community while offering opportunities for relaxation and reflection. This thoughtful design encourages shared responsibility and a deeper connection between people and their environment.
