Elementary school Žilina

The subject of the master’s thesis was the design of the architectural and structural-technical design of the elementary school building in Žilina near Kladno. The urban design of this area was the subject of a pre-diploma project, the aim of which was to propose a vision for the further possible development of the village of Žilina. The thesis contains selected parts from the documentation for the issuance of a building permit and concepts of static and technical solution.

The design aims to create a suitable background for obtaining quality education, both for the inhabitants of Žilina and the adjacent areas. Together with the surrounding urban design, it has the potential to create a living heart of the village with a welcoming environment for future pupils, but also for the rest of the inhabitants of Žilina, for example, by including a new sports hall in the design. Another distinctive aspect of the proposal is the school’s focus on extended teaching of traditional crafts, such as working with wood, metal, or various aspects of agriculture. Therefore, enough space is reserved for indoor and outdoor teaching for this purpose. The mass solution of the building is based on operational needs and at the same time tries to make the most of the appropriate orientation to the cardinal points. The building is designed in the shape of the letter L, where the operations of classic classrooms with cabinets from specialized classes and craft workshops are divided in individual wings, in order to optimize the quality of teaching. These two wings have a common, in addition to the communication corridor, a dining room with an adjacent kitchen for food preparation. The whole building has 2 above-ground floors and in one part also one undeground floor. On the second floor, it is connected by a bridge to the new building of the sports hall, which has three above-ground floors and an outdoor playground located on the roof. Great emphasis was also placed on the design of the garden part of the plot, which contains, in addition to break areas and areas intended for rest, also facilities for outdoor lessons, greenhouses and flower beds, a wild meadow with fruit trees and bee poles and a running oval with a length of 200 meters with a track for long jump. In connection with the school building, we can also find a newly designed kindergarten building, a new park with an adjacent café and a children’s playground

The building will serve as a primary school for the municipality of Žilina and the surrounding area. It is designed with 9 classes for a total of 164 pupils (max. 180). As part of the proposal, great emphasis is also placed on providing spaces for teaching traditional crafts. In addition to the elementary school, the main building also contains operations for food preparation and a cafeteria. The preparation of food for the kindergarten, which is located across the street, will probably also take place here. The school's main building is connected to the new sports hall building, which also includes a gym and rooftop playground and additional spaces for rent. Apart from teaching, it is expected that the hall will be used for commercial purposes.
