THE PLATFORMS

Idea projektu

The building is located in the historical center of Budapest, in close proximity to the Parliament, on Alkotmány utca. It serves as a facility for the Budapest Business School (BGE), which focuses on business studies and social sciences. The building is a protected cultural monument and is currently in active use by students and faculty. Although partial renovations have been carried out, the university leadership aims to further enhance the building’s functionality, increase its efficiency, and re-establish a connection with the public — a connection that diminished significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The architectural concept focuses on opening up the building and creating a natural link with the surrounding public spaces near the Parliament. It introduces a dynamic system of platforms at various height levels, designed to maximize the use of the building's volume. These platforms also serve as key connective elements between different zones, facilitating interaction between the university environment and the general public.

Popis projektu

The design includes transitional spaces in the form of winter gardens — buffer zones that mediate the passage from exterior to interior. Depending on the season or need, these spaces can be opened or closed, contributing to a pleasant and adaptable microclimate. One of the most significant interventions is the replacement of the original small basement windows with full-height openings. This transformation brings natural light into previously dark basement areas while preserving the historic rhythm and proportions of the protected facade.

Technické informace

The material strategy distinguishes between original and newly added elements. All new architectural additions are made from red steel, clearly setting them apart from the historical structure. Exposed brick walls, vaulted ceilings, and timber beams emphasize the authenticity and character of the interior. A key feature of the project is the integration of greenery into the spaces, aiming to reduce overheating and increase user comfort.

Dominant red color

I praise the graphic design of the project as well as the level of detail that the student chose. I also positively evaluate the analytical part, to which the student devoted enough time, based on which a quality concept was created.

The color red dominates both in the graphics and in the interior. In places it is a bit "too much" and it is questionable whether the given color should not be only in accents. At the same time, the color red can provoke aggression in the interior user to a greater extent.

The materials used and the selected textures sound harmonious.
