I appreciate how the project was conceived and narrated. The thought behind the idea is commendable and demonstrates a deep understanding of both the project brief and the city of Beirut. The resulting structure, "The Phoenix," is brutalistic, fragile, and, perhaps intentionally, evokes feelings of sadness. I believe that memorials should transition from a sense of despair to hope, as this adds value for visitors and future generations. It is important to introduce vibrant elements or inviting spaces that can lighten the heavy atmosphere that currently fills this site. Additionally, there is a clear disconnect from the local context; if the brief hadn't specified it, this structure could be located anywhere in the world.
It is essential to consider the fragility of structures in relation to their buildability.
Water is a dynamic element on-site and should be envisioned as a fluid, rather than confined to narrow channels.
Context is IMPORTANT. Beirut is a vibrant city with a rich history and stunning surroundings, and the project should reflect these qualities in some manner.
