This urban design proposal presents a thoughtful and socially inclusive reconfiguration of Marjanishvili Square, aiming to shift its focus from vehicle-dominated infrastructure toward a people-centered public realm. The intervention not only restructures vehicular flow with redesigned traffic lanes and controlled access but also significantly increases the square’s pedestrian surfaces and recreational areas, making it safer, more accessible, and more inviting for diverse user groups.
The strength of the proposal lies in its spatial clarity and its ability to blend functional efficiency with civic engagement. The use of an interactive amphitheater, temporary installations, and an open plaza adjacent to the metro entrance generates a flexible public platform for events, informal meetings, and cultural interaction. Planting strategies are well-integrated, providing noise buffers while allowing visual continuity of the square’s architectural character.
While the visual language remains understated, the spatial programming, movement flows, and democratic design ethos are particularly well-executed. With minimal yet effective formal gestures, the project revitalizes the square’s identity and enhances its urban legibility.
Overall, this is a strong urban design proposal that addresses contemporary urban challenges through inclusive spatial strategies and site-sensitive interventions, offering a meaningful contribution to public space design in Tbilisi.
