This project presents a visionary approach to architectural education by proposing a design that serves as both a learning environment and a community catalyst in Panadura. The concept reimagines an architecture school as an evolving structure that embodies the principles of the design-build pedagogy, fostering a dynamic relationship between students, the construction process, and the broader community.
The building's design emphasizes the ongoing nature of construction, allowing students to engage directly with the building process, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. This hands-on approach not only enhances the educational experience but also encourages community involvement, making the construction process a shared journey.
Material selection is thoughtfully aligned with the socio-economic context of Panadura, utilizing locally sourced and repurposed materials to reduce costs and reflect the region's material culture. The color palette draws inspiration from local urban initiatives, such as the UDA's street enhancements, incorporating vibrant hues to create a pedestrian-friendly and visually engaging environment.
Overall, "Life of a Building" exemplifies a holistic and context-sensitive approach to architectural education and community development. Its innovative integration of learning, building, and community engagement sets a commendable precedent for future educational facilities.
