As a jury member, I found Ripple to be a thoughtful and emotionally resonant project that effectively translates the abstract qualities of sound into spatial and material language. The contrast between the existing rigid brick structure and the newly introduced curvilinear polycarbonate form is particularly compelling. This juxtaposition softens the overall massing and creates a visual and conceptual metaphor for sound waves and their amplification. It’s a well-executed gesture that adds depth to the parti and reinforces the healing narrative.
The spatial organization supports a carefully sequenced experience—beginning with social engagement on the first floor and moving toward more personal and introspective treatments on the upper levels. The third-floor dance space adds an unexpected and dynamic element, encouraging user participation in both sound creation and energy production. This integration of movement, sound, and sustainability is a unique and memorable feature.
Material choices are appropriate and reinforce the project’s intention. The polycarbonate facade diffuses daylight in a calming manner, while natural wood and fabric elements improve acoustics and tactile comfort. The building’s orientation and its ability to bring in natural light on three sides is skillfully utilized to support a soothing environment.
If there’s one area where the project could be pushed further, it’s in the differentiation of sensory experiences between similar program zones—such as the sound spa and massage pods. Providing more contrast in acoustic or spatial character could strengthen the overall progression. Additionally, the technical execution of the complex curvilinear forms will require careful detailing to preserve the conceptual clarity without compromising function.
Overall, Ripple is a strong project that blends old and new architecture with elegance. It offers a multisensory journey that is both meaningful and restorative—an intelligent response to the urban condition and a powerful example of how design can promote well-being.
