The design is inspired by the surrounding landscape, where the Zumberg vineyards form a unique, organically evolving pattern. Each parcel follows a different orientation shaped by the sun and terrain. This diversity is reflected in the spatial concept of the winery: linear volumes are positioned perpendicularly to the vineyard rows, creating a dialogue with the local context while naturally opening toward the landscape. Rather than imposing itself, the architecture extends the vineyard’s rhythm and topography, resulting in a seamless integration of building and nature.

Two volumes emerge from the terrain—one dedicated to visitors, the other to wine production. Though visually distinct, they connect underground at a central point where guests gain direct visual access to the production process. This moment of transparency becomes a space of encounter, offering tours, tastings, and an authentic connection to winemaking. Functional zones—restaurant, accommodation, production, and administration—are arranged in clearly defined blocks that follow the vineyard grid, enabling flexible operations while ensuring a strong relationship between architecture, wine, and landscape.
The exterior of the restaurant is embraced on both sides by vineyards, naturally shaping a variety of public and more private zones, each with its own unique atmosphere. The restaurant flows seamlessly into an outdoor terrace, offering spaces for seating, wine tasting, or live music, making the exterior a true extension of the interior and a vibrant meeting place.

Among the vineyard rows, smaller, more intimate spots are nestled, allowing visitors to find themselves directly within the vines. While relaxing or enjoying a wine tasting, guests can sample the very grapes used to produce the local wine, creating a deeper, sensory connection with the place and the winemaking process.

Given the linearity of the buildings, a reinforced concrete structural system with longitudinal load-bearing walls was chosen for the design. The total thickness of the insulated exterior walls is 400 mm. All ceiling structures consist of reinforced concrete slabs with a thickness of 250 mm, and the roof layers are designed as an extensive green roof. In areas with large glazed surfaces, the solid wall is replaced by a slender structural frame with slim metal columns that vertically divide the façade while maintaining an open visual connection to the surrounding landscape. The load-bearing perimeter walls are spaced 10 meters apart.

In the visitor area, this module is supplemented by a third, central load-bearing wall that also helps define the interior layout. In the production area, 10-meter spans are bridged using prestressed Spiroll concrete panels, allowing for a column-free, open-plan space.

Shading for the glazed façades facing the sun is provided by folding shutters made of perforated corten steel panels. When closed, they provide sun protection; when opened, they function as shading elements or guardrails in front of operable windows.

In terms of materiality, the design emphasizes a combination of natural and durable materials. The dominant element is sand-colored exposed concrete, complemented by corten details and aluminum sheet accents. Together, they create a subdued, authentic material palette that harmonizes with the wine landscape and reflects the building’s timeless and weathered aesthetic.
