Overall, this project offers a thoughtful and well-composed interpretation of a spiritual environment, which has succeeded in capturing the concept of peace and reflection through architectural means. This master plan has a strong concept of spatial hierarchy and functional circulation, which has resulted in a seamless segregation between the public, semi-public, and sacred spaces while still exhibiting a strong sense of unity and continuity. Another effective approach related to massing has been adopted, which is quite reflective and passive through its employment of light, shadow, and enclosure, thus promoting a strong sense of peace and calmness within this project.
One possible addition could be to further emphasize the connection between the interior spiritual realm and the environment that surrounds the structure. Although the massing and enclosure blend well to create a sense of serenity, the addition of more controlled views, such as framed views or transitional courtyards, could help raise the user’s awareness of the environment during times of spiritual contemplation. This would reinforce the spiritual contemplation experience that is possible in the mosque through the dialogue between environment, structure, and lighting.
