Work description
Composite processing and characterization for civil engineering applicationsEmpa is a national research laboratory and part of the ETH Domain. We conduct cutting-edge materials and technology research, generating interdisciplinary solutions to major challenges faced by industry, and create the necessary scientific basis to ensure that our society develops in a sustainable manner. Our Laboratory for Mechanical Systems Engineering is working on diverse projects dealing with the development of carbon, glass or natural fiber composite materials and components for structural and mechanical engineering applications. These include the development of CFRP-prestressed concrete elements for civil engineering structures, composite anchorage systems for CFRP cables and tendons, surface modification of carbon fibers for tunable degradability, innovative biodegradable composite materials, and techniques to reclaim and reuse end-of-life FRP lamellae amongst others. You will support the laboratory staff and will gain experience in composite/structural materials manufacturing and experimental testing techniques. Depending on the project, tasks will include:• Manufacturing of materials and test specimens using mixing, casting, pressing and/or laminating techniques with different resins and fibers or fillers• Assisting in manufacturing of CFRP-prestressed concrete elements• Strengthening of concrete structural elements with Externally Bonded CFRP plates• Mechanical testing of adhesively bonded CFRP strips on concrete and other substrates• Setting up advanced sensing instrumentation for strain measurement in test specimens• Measurement and monitoring of long-term creep experiments• Analysis of experimental data• Documentation of the experimental work and results
