Work description
MEDevice Africa, a Kenyan-based medtech company that designs, develops and manufactures medical devices for the African market seeks a Product Design student to undertake an internship developing ergonomic device designs for handheld medical devices. This project would be ideal for a student experienced in human-centered design, with some background in product design, artistic flair, and an interest in creating durable, easy-to-use devices for diverse populations.The selected student will work closely with a mechanical engineer and the electronics development team, to ensure that the designs are sturdy and compatible with internal components, ready for the rigors of frequent use in healthcare settings across Africa. This hands-on project offers the chance to gain real-world experience in contextual medical device design, prototyping, and collaboration with healthcare and engineering professionals.Key Tasks1. Design ergonomic, durable device enclosures optimized for frequent use in African healthcare settings considering:a. Compatibility with device components.b. User accessibility, usability and comfort for African users in multiple environments.c. Cultural contexts.d. Comfort and intuitive use.e. Durability and functionality.2. Identify cost-effective, durable materials suitable for African climates andhealthcare needs.3. Prototype and lterate Designs - Collaborating with engineering teams to test functionality and manufacturing feasibility.4. Create 2D illustration, 3D models and detailed documentation on designs done.5. Teach basic product design skills to engineering colleagues.6. Present final models for review, with a comprehensive project report for Student Portfolio and further development.
