Campus

Idea projektu

The main topic of my thesis is based on a selected location that was part of the Multi Comfort Student Contest. This location is situated near the city of Lyon, France, specifically in the municipality of Villefontaine in the Isère department. The thesis focuses on the design of a residential zone that will primarily serve students and faculty members of Les Grands Ateliers and Compagnons de France. The location is close to the Les Grands Ateliers campus. From an architectural perspective, the residential zone is very well integrated into the surrounding environment, as it does not interfere with the existing urban fabric and meets the predefined requirements. The residential zone consists of four separate buildings connected by a pedestrian footbridge, which serves not only as a connection but also has both urbanistic and architectural functions. All four buildings have two above-ground floors, except for one building, where one part has a basement floor due to the terrain slope. These buildings are labeled A, B, C, and D. Each building has a distinct function: short-term accommodation, laboratory, offices/study rooms, multifunctional rooms, and a bistro. The aforementioned buildings are constructed using a variety of materials. The foundation is made of a wooden structure using CLT panels, complemented by steel Deltabeam beams. Stability and strength are ensured by reinforced concrete cores. As part of the assignment, the renovation of a historical building in the village of Chimilin was also included. The goal was to create flexible, year-round usable spaces for various organizations. The building was designed to be adaptable to new functions when needed.

Sustainable modular architecture in the context of Les Grand ateliers

Urban concept
The urban concept is based on the spatial arrangement of five basic volumes, the resulting position and mutual context of which was influenced by the original urban structures from the wider surroundings in connection with the original Les Grands Ateliers buildings and the natural potential in the direct vicinity. The prototyping area becomes the central motif in the design and connects the original public space of Les Grands Ateliers and the new proposed public space of the inner block, which brings the area an appropriate context on the border between the original and the specified area.

Architecture
The modular architecture refers to the original design of Les Grands Ateliers and is also based on the construction module, where the prototypes will be presented. I positively evaluate the work with the prefabricated structure of wooden elements, which could be dismantled and used in the next mass design in the event of a change in the functional content of the objects.

Layout
The functional units are clearly defined within the layout also thanks to the individual masses that are separated from each other on the ground floor. The floor plan is legible thanks to the set grid of columns and looks tidy. Modularity flows from the interior to the exterior on the ground floor and on the upper floor towards the terrace. I evaluate both public spaces positively from the point of view of possible variable use for various leisure activities.
