This project is an exemplary example of contextually responsive urban design, aiming to revitalize the historically and socially significant Townhall Market in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The proposal reflects a deep understanding of local dynamics, informal economies, and socio-political challenges by proposing a systematic and inclusive redevelopment strategy that reintroduces the vibrancy and civic function of the marketplace.
The design intelligently integrates public, commercial, and cultural functions—retaining traditional bazaar elements like the Kacha Bazar while introducing structured hawker zones, a multipurpose hall, cinema, museum, and green urban park. The spatial layering of open plazas, vertical circulation, and categorical zoning offers a coherent architectural response to congestion, informality, and changing community needs. Ventilation, fire safety, pedestrian movement, and recreational demands are addressed with precision.
While the architectural language remains modest, it is contextually appropriate. The project excels in urban logic, programmatic clarity, and socio-economic vision. It is a rare case where redevelopment genuinely seeks to preserve heritage through transformation, rather than replacement.
Overall, this is a well-researched, highly inclusive, and spatially rich urban proposal that balances commercial viability with public good.
