This project presents a visionary approach to sustainable urban living, thoughtfully integrating architectural design with the natural and social context of Breckenheim, an eastern district of Wiesbaden, Germany. Inspired by the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers, the design emulates the harmonious flow of nature, influencing various aspects of the project—from city axis alignment to building volume, facade articulation, housing typologies, and outdoor space design.
The development addresses the relocation of local administrative institutions, seizing the opportunity to create a dense, mixed-use, and sustainable community. By offering a balanced combination of housing typologies and a significant proportion of affordable housing, the project promotes social participation and caters to diverse lifestyles. The residential buildings are characterized by continuous facades, deliberately avoiding protruding elements like balconies and bay windows to maintain a seamless aesthetic. Instead, loggias and green attics are incorporated to provide outdoor spaces and enhance environmental quality.
A notable innovation is the adoption of additive manufacturing techniques, specifically 3D concrete printing, combined with sandwich slabs and wall cavities. This construction method not only reduces costs and construction time but also minimizes environmental impact by utilizing environmentally friendly cement and requiring fewer craftsmen.
Public infrastructure is thoughtfully integrated, featuring amenities such as a park, mobility hub, childcare facilities, a café, community room, and even a drone landing platform for express deliveries. These elements collectively enhance the quality of life for residents and foster a vibrant, interconnected community.
Overall, "House of FLOW" exemplifies a holistic and context-sensitive approach to urban development, setting a commendable precedent for future sustainable housing projects.
