This project presents a thoughtful approach to conserving and adapting historical buildings in Ethiopia, integrating significant elements of Ethiopian architecture with contemporary construction technologies. The design envisions a small, freestanding tower located near the National Theatre in Addis Ababa, aiming to harmonize traditional architectural values with modern urban living.
The building mass is articulated into three similar volumes arranged around a central spiral staircase, providing each apartment with a distinct, house-like outline. The circular wall of the central shaft influences the apartment layouts, creating dynamic convex corridor spaces at the entrances and static, concave areas at the backs of the living rooms. This spatial organization draws inspiration from Henri Chomette's Saint George Terraces, demonstrating how varied spatial experiences can be achieved using simple, standardized elements.
Technically, the project encompasses a total area of 1,000 square meters, with a built-up area of 305 square meters, designated for apartment use. While the conceptual framework effectively bridges historical and modern architectural practices, further development in detailing, material selection, and sustainable design strategies would enhance the project's feasibility and impact.
Overall, "New Design in Old Structure – St. George Terrace" offers a commendable vision for integrating heritage conservation with contemporary residential design. With additional refinement, it has the potential to serve as a model for context-sensitive urban development in Ethiopia.
