This project presents an architecturally poetic and culturally sensitive intervention that reimagines the space between Varosha and the Old City as a living bridge of dialogue and reflection. The conceptual ambition "What Does Cultural Center Want to Be Between Varosha & Old City" is powerfully expressed through a dynamic architectural language that reflects both past narratives and future aspirations of Famagusta. The project’s fragmented yet cohesive massing thoughtfully embraces the site's topography and existing vegetation ensuring minimal disruption to the natural and built context while maximizing spatial exploration and visual connectivity.
The strategic use of vertical structures as markers within the otherwise horizontal complex evokes a sense of rootedness and orientation while also offering panoramic views toward the sea and the culturally rich surrounding landmarks. This not only enhances spatial experience but also deepens the project’s symbolic role as a unifying element across divided histories. The integration of public zones, exhibition areas and research accommodations promotes year-round engagement, transforming the site into a vibrant hub for scholars, creatives and tourists alike.
Constructionally, the project demonstrates a clear structural logic with circulation, zoning and layering carefully considered. The axial planning radiates from a central circulation spine enabling fluid movement and spatial clarity. The commitment to outdoor functionality together with the vision of hosting the Cyprus Biennial, elevates the project from a simple cultural facility to a national stage for intellectual and artistic exchange.
In essence, this is a visionary proposal that honors heritage while boldly stepping into the future an architectural statement of coexistence, memory and shared cultural evolution.
