This urban revitalization proposal delivers an exceptionally detailed and culturally sensitive strategy for reactivating the historical trade hub of Khatunganj in Chattogram, Bangladesh. The project is grounded in a deep understanding of the site’s commercial, architectural, and socio-historical legacy—spanning over 2,000 years of maritime trade and market evolution. By combining adaptive reuse, infrastructural redesign, and canal recovery, the project skillfully reintroduces Khatunganj as a modern, resilient, and heritage-conscious marketplace.
The proposal’s strength lies in its multi-layered approach. It addresses traffic congestion with a well-thought-out logistics strategy that includes loading/unloading sheds, back road access for warehouses, pedestrianization, and reactivation of water-based goods movement. The design integrates modular warehouses, government land recovery, canal edge development, and textured roads to both relieve infrastructural pressure and enhance the urban experience.
Architecturally, the use of vernacular elements such as arches, exposed columns, and humidity-controlled facades is merged with contemporary detailing to deliver a form that is respectful yet forward-looking. Public spaces—including kiosks, rest areas, and adaptive reuse of historical structures like the Pitambar Shah store—enrich the civic and commercial atmosphere.
Overall, this is an excellent and contextually rich urban proposal, showcasing architectural intelligence, historic sensitivity, and technical feasibility. It offers a powerful model for how local heritage can be leveraged to foster economic regeneration and civic pride.
