A study of the historical quarter in Nizhny Novgorod (Russia) from the middle of the 19th century is presented, as well as a project of an apartment building on the site of the destroyed houses in this quarter. The concept is based on the combination of two prevailing styles on the street under study: brick eclecticism and modern buildings with references to Art Nouveau.
The facade design uses nuanced plastic techniques inherent in the characteristic area of red brick architecture, for example, brick belts are stretched between the floors, completely repeating the profile of the cornice of merchant Kolchin's house, as well as rounded corner motifs, semicircular and arched windows, and the roosts of the 1st floors. According to the laws of contextualism, stylistic elements of more modern buildings were also taken into account: thin three-private windows and decorative tiles.

In Russia, construction in the historical center of a city requires a thorough contextual study of the territory and the legal aspects of protecting nearby cultural heritage sites.

The street begins to develop as Voznesenskaya Street - opposite the Church of the Ascension, it crosses the Calf and rests on Sergievsky ravine. The Scribe's Book of 1622, the earliest surviving document, gives us a clear idea of the general structure of the city, buildings and street names. By this time, Yamskaya Sloboda had formed, forming Ilyinskaya Street, and the nearby Veal Sloboda stretched along Veal Street, which was to some extent a stand-in for Ilyinskaya Street.
In the middle of the 19th century, the site was chaotically built up with wooden houses, with the exception of two stone houses owned by philistine Nikonor Kolchin, which have been preserved in our time. The two only stone houses at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are being actively completed. After 1917, almost all non-residential and wooden buildings were demolished, and others were built in their place, which were preserved until the beginning. 20th century.The map of Nizhny Novgorod from 1948 has no data on buildings located within the boundaries of the site under study. The plan is based on the only surviving photographs of the street and satellite images from the late 20th century. Since the 1990s, there has been an active demolition of wooden buildings. There have been no houses No. 22 and No. 24 since 1992, in their place there is a silicate brick house No. 22. The street has been continued by house No. 24 since 2010 and No. 28 since 2014. Wooden houses No. 18 and No. 20, as well as brick house No. 16 with a wooden porch, were almost completely destroyed by fire. The remaining facade elements are currently under conservation.
Stone houses No. 14 and No. 26 are residential, the house on Nizhegorodskaya St. has recently been plastered, having lost its original red brick appearance.

This project perfectly fits into the context of the building and combines the diverse styles of Nizhny Novgorod.

The whole house is made of solid brick on a precast reinforced concrete frame and is covered with facing bricks.
